recital guidelines
Important Reminders: Location: All recitals must be performed on campus in the Concert Hall.
Dates: All recitals should be performed during the school week, but you should check the list of available dates for Senior Recitals in the Concert Hall with Mr. Stinar. Then contact Mr. Shaw, Asst. Principal, in order to be officially placed on the calendar. Schedule a dress rehearsal time in the hall also, preferably 2-3 days earlier than your performance date.
Dress Rehearsals: Please schedule your dress rehearsal 2-3 days before your recital. This must be placed on the Concert Hall calendar. You also need to request permission from Mr. Styron to schedule your dress rehearsal during your vocal major class. As a professional courtesy, please send emails to both Mr. Shively & Mr. Styron as a reminder of your rehearsal in the Concert Hall, as it may conflict with curricular activities. Emails must be sent within the week of your dress rehearsal. If there are other students in your recital who need to be excused from class, please schedule your rehearsal so that they miss minimal time of their major; also please ask permission for them to be excused. This would also be appropriate to contact one of the Instrumental teachers if you plan to collaborate with a DSA instrumentalist (band, piano, guitar or orchestra.)
Times: No evening or weekend recitals are permitted. Performances may begin as early as 3:30 pm and end no later than 6:30 pm. Recitals should be approximately one hour in length.
Program: Songs must be approved by your voice teacher and contain a variety of genres. A maximum of 3 collaborative songs are permitted. Joint recitals are required; there is a 14-song minimum and a 16-song maximum. No single recitals will be permitted. Mr. Brian Stinar will edit your written recital program during Senior Seminar.
Voice teacher fee: Because the recital requires extra time of your voice teacher, please pay $100 or trade 2 hours of lesson time for dress rehearsal (1.5 hours max) and recital.
Collaboration: Student collaboration is encouraged but you must provide a written contract for those involved in your recital. Have your voice teacher approve and advise you regarding this contract. You must also have regular communication with the instrumental faculty regarding scheduling of instrumental students. Seniors are required to have a joint recital with another Vocal Music senior.
Accompanist: Ryan Durfee, our staff accompanist, is available to accompany and coach for senior recitals. His fee is $200.00 per student for dress rehearsal and recital; Mr. Durfee will work out a rehearsal schedule with each student. Scholarships are also available. Students must provide Mr. Durfee with a complete book of repertoire no later than 6 weeks before recital date. Of course, you may opt to use a student or other professional accompanist for your recital.
Reception: Please keep it simple, like punch, cookies, or basic party platters. Limit your reception to the foyer outside the Concert Hall (on main level if no event following your recital OR upstairs on 2nd floor). Try to keep it under an hour, as other evening events may be starting by 7pm.
We encourage all parents and students in the department to attend these recitals in support of our wonderful seniors. They have worked very hard on these culminating projects and greatly appreciate your support! Only Middle School students may use these recitals for concert evaluations.
